Course description

What will I learn?

This course is suitable for those who are new to horticulture and who would like to begin to formalise their horticultural knowledge. No previous knowledge is required but you should have a reasonable command of the English language. You will complete a learning contract and initial assessment to establish your training and support needs and any relevant previous experience. You will learn how to carry out a range of seasonal horticulture activities. You will learn, develop and practice the skills required for progression into the horticultural sector. Your tutor will teach you by lecture/discussion and demonstration. You will undertake practical, seasonal horticulture tasks and be assessed on these. You will receive handouts and worksheets to enhance your understanding and consolidate your learning. One-to-one help will be available as appropriate. Your tutor will also introduce you to Newcastle City Learning’s Virtual Learning Environment (VLE). You will be assessed by means of practical and some written tasks carried out in class or within the grounds of Westgate College. Assessments are marked by your tutor and you will be given feedback on your progress. You will be encouraged to work at the level appropriate to you as an indiviudal. City and Guilds Level 1 - Award, Certificate or Diploma in Practical Horticulture Skills. After completing the Level 1 Award, you can progress to Level 1 Certicicate and then Diploma. It is then possible to progress to Level 2 Practical Horticulture Skills or employment. Your tutor will be able to advise you further. All materials for your course, including most Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) will be provided by your tutor. However, it is a requirment of the course that you bring a pair of steel toe capped boots to wear when doing practical work. Please also bring a pen and notepaper as you will probably find it useful to take extra notes. Help with numeracy or literacy is available. ICT drop-in sessions are available during term time and are open to all learners. Additional support can be provided for students with learning difficulties and/or disabilities. Learner Support Funding is available for equipment, childcare and travel to learners who qualify.
