Course description

3D Printing Workshop

On this course, you’ll gain a hands-on experience of 3D printing, with opportunities to explore materials and see how the equipment works, and to develop a personal project.

Artists and designers of all backgrounds use 3D printing to create models and parts, from simple forms to detailed working prototypes.

It’s a technology that’s become a quick and affordable means to produce one-off items.

This course is therefore aimed at professionals and hobbyists of all backgrounds and abilities who are interested in architecture, craft, art and design.

There’ll be demonstrations, 1-2-1 time and practical activities to help you experiment with this fascinating technology.

On this course, you will:

  • be introduced to design software including SketchUp, AutoCAD and TinkerCAD
  • explore the stages of 3D printing to produce models, objects or parts
  • learn about materials and processes that you might want to explore further after the course.

With support from the tutor, you’ll research a project of your choice based on your own ideas.

This could be a project that you’re already working on, or something that you’re itching to make a reality.

All the materials will be supplied.

What will I gain?

Upon completing the course, you’ll have an overview of 3D printing, a project either completed or in development, and an understanding of how the technology can be used in your work.

In addition to these sessions on campus, there'll also be an online after-care session with your tutor and the group to discuss any technical questions you have.

Where you'll learn: You will be based in the School of Architecture, Design and Built Environment on the City Campus.

You will produce models and scale prototypes on the latest model of our medical grade 3D printer.

You'll receive training and advice on how to full utilise this fantastic piece of equipment.

You’ll also spend time working in our spacious IT suites equipped with industry standard software inlcuding SketchUp, AutoCAD and TinkerCAD.

You’ll also have access to our library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can’t reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.

Tutor Profile: Mark Beeston is a senior technician in the model making workshop at Nottingham Trent University.

He has over 20 years of experience within the creative industries as an independent designer, artist, maker and facilitator in areas such as sculpture, furniture, product research and development, theatre, film and outdoor play.
