Course description

Branding and Communication - for a Better World!

This course combines ethical brand development with industry-level graphic design.

It’s for anyone with some design experience who wants to deepen their knowledge of branding through a structured, meaningful project.

With an emphasis on communication and visualisation skills using Adobe Creative Suite, you’ll create a brand from the point of view of a creative thinker and as an advocate for a cause.

On this course, you’ll practice a range of skills to create a brand.

Your brand will respond to a professional brief around a current social, political or environmental issue.

It will include graphic design, fashion communication, marketing, art direction and creative storytelling.

You’ll also learn how to employ quality research techniques, consumer profiling and professional visual creation.

On this course, you will:

  • become a better critical thinker
  • learn how to contextualise an idea
  • discuss current events and issues and their impact on design
  • complete consumer research
  • practice creating graphic design content that speaks to your audience
  • explore trend forecasting and visual mood boards
  • develop your software skills
  • expand your graphic design knowledge in font-pairing, document set-up, time-savers and product mock-ups
  • prepare ways to present your ideas and develop storytelling for a brand.

The course will include lectures, discussions and critiques combined with practical work and homework exercises.

What will you gain?

By the end of this course, you’ll have created new work for a professional graphic design portfolio, and have expanded your critical thinking and market intelligence skills.

You’ll leave having made a proposal to the rest of the group for your brand idea, and have gained confidence in your professional presentation and communication skills.

Where you'll learn: You will be based in the School of Art and Design on the City Campus.

You’ll find collaborative working spaces where you develop your sketches and concepts, and IT suites equipped with industry standard software including Adobe Creative Cloud.

You’ll also have access to our library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can’t reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.

Tutor Profiles: Craig Proud runs a creative workshop, design and print studio, Dizzy Ink.

Being a lover of education and grassroots activism, Craig has focused his personal research into Notts Zine Library, a free open and accessible resource currently based in Nottingham Contemporary.

With an extensive portfolio, Craig has been involved in many projects with a cause and continues to do so.

His artwork has been exhibited at Nottingham Castle, alongside V&A's collection of activist media for the exhibition: A World to Win, 2015.

As well as putting on workshops for D&AD New Blood and various festivals; another highlight was being commissioned to produce a special exhibition around the UK's referendum.

Through his print studio Dizzy Ink, he led QUADs major exhibition, titled, Three Months On, 2016.

Aikaterini Paraskevopoulou is the founder of female empowerment magazine MOAN.

Her physical magazine is sold around the world, often being commissioned to conduct topical lectures for special events.

She continues to work on marketing and visual communication projects as an illustrator and designer for brands in the creative industry, namely her recently published book for UK cycling company, Rapha.

Between running her own freelance career and her personal publishing projects, Kat in a senior lecturer to Fashion Communication and Promotion at Nottingham Trent University.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Level: Intermediate

Entry requirement: You must have completed a beginner’s graphic design course at NTU or elsewhere, or have previous professional or college experience in the subject.

Experience of using Adobe Creative Suite is also required.
