Course description

Interior Design Professional Portfolio

There is always a lot of competition for interior design work, so it’s essential that you can demonstrate as much experience and knowledge in your CV and portfolio as possible.

This course therefore aims to build on previous design studies, and is ideal for anyone seriously considering a career as an interior designer.

The course will provide hands-on experience of all the stages involved in medium-sized interior design projects, from briefing to design development and on to visualisation.

The projects will cover both domestic and commercial/public spaces, and you will be mentored at every stage.

The course is based on practical work, combining lectures and workshops with manageable homework assignments and one-to-one portfolio advice.

You will be provided with client briefs, and be expected to research and develop a design scheme, and produce presentation and construction documents.

The course will cover:

  • practical research
  • space planning
  • mood boards
  • sample boards
  • construction drawings
  • fixtures, fittings and equipment documentation (FF&E)
  • basic Sketchup skills and knowledge
  • basic Vectorworks skills and knowledge
  • an understanding of interior design project stages
  • an understanding of building regulations.

What will I gain?

By the end of the course, you’ll have the start of a professional looking portfolio for you to continue adding to after the course.

You’ll also have the skills and confidence to tackle a creative project for a client.

Where you'll learn: You will be based in the School of Architecture, Design and Built Environment on the City Campus.

You’ll find collaborative working spaces where you develop your sketches and concepts, and IT suites equipped with industry standard software including Adobe Creative Cloud, SketchUp and VectorWorks.

You’ll also have access to our library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can’t reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Level: Intermediate

Entry requirement: You should have completed a beginners design course at NTU or elsewhere, or have some professional experience.
