Drawing & Illustration - All Abilities

Drawing & Illustration - All Abilities [HDF4831G]: Overview

Develop your drawing and illustration skills in this friendly, creative class

What will we cover?

Want to draw? This is an ideal place to start. On this popular, creative and inspiring course we will look at drawing & illustration techniques. Through weekly projects you will develop skills in using line, tone and colour. You will also learn about narrative and how to tell a story in your picture(s). You will understand how to use composition to create a stronger image and be introduced to a range of media including pencil, pen, wash, watercolour, soft chalk pastel, coloured pencils. You will also look at work from other artists and designers for ideas and inspiration and develop your own ideas and voice.
You will gain more confidence in using drawing materials and be encouraged to take part in group discussions and have access to one to one support . The overall aim is to help you learn some techniques and develop your ideas through a mixture of practice, discussion and demonstration.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

From those with little experience of drawing and illustration to those who have who have practiced but need a refresher and inspiration to get motivated again in an affirming and friendly class.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

For the first session bring a pad of A3 cartridge paper, soft grade of pencils (2B, 4B/ 6B) a 2H pencil and eraser (and whatever drawing materials you may already have purchased).

Other materials needed during the course will be discussed in advance of the lesson and a materials list given out at the beginning of the course. If you need instruction on basic materials and what to purchase for the course and where to buy from please email your query to the tutor at .

For more expensive or specialist materials, the tutor will bring these in so that new learners have the opportunity to try before they buy but the expectation is that learners will bring in paper and cheaper materials for their own use.

What can I do when I finish the course?

Learners have had work published, produced greetings cards and entered competitions. There is also the opportunity to exhibit your work at the Harvey Gallery in Guildford in the Learner Exhibition. Further compatible courses are available in life drawing, calligraphy and there are workshops available in courses such as printmaking through Surrey Adult Learning.
