Drawing & Painting - Exploring Brush, Ink, Fabric & Pastel


Can’t draw? Want to draw? This is an ideal place to start. You will be introduced to various materials such as pencil, charcoal, pastel and even using fabrics

What will we cover?

On this mixed media course you will be looking at basic drawing and some waterbased painting techniques, including simple exercises to develop skills in tone, colour, texture and composition. You will be introduced to pencil, charcoal, pastel and the use of collage helping you gain confidence in using these materials. You will be encouraged to take part in group discussions and have access to one to one support. The overall aim is to help you learn some basic and effective techniques through a mixture of practice, discussion and demonstration.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Ideal for Beginners - absolutely anyone and everyone who needs to chill out doing something completely different from their everyday work.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Please bring to the first session: a pen for writing, a ruler and the following drawing equipment: A4 cartridge paper (Tutor recommends Daler Rowney) and pencils: 2H, HB, B, 2B, 4B (Tutor recommends Staedtler Mars Lumograph). Also bring a sharpener or craft knife and a plastic rubber. Other items will be required later – the tutor will discuss painting equipment once you have started the course. If you have any queries before the course starts, please email the tutor on
adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk to discuss materials.

What can I do when I finish the course?

To progress to other courses in painting, drawing, illustration, life drawing, mixed media and watercolour. Many opportunities to take up other art & craft classes, meet like-minded people and make friends.

Additional information
Learners are expected to bring their own materials. Some less common or unusual materials may be brought in by tutor.
