Course description

Functional Skills English

These courses at Surrey Adult Learning, are for adults aged 19 and over who live in Surrey or a neighbouring county. They are not for residents of London boroughs.

If you are aged 19 or over, our Functional Skills English courses can help you to develop the practical skills in English that you need to live, work and study. You will learn to apply English skills in real life situations through reading, writing, speaking and listening tasks. The courses are available at Entry Level 3 and Level 1. If you have applied to study GCSE with us, and you do not already have a grade 9-4 (A*-C) we may recommend you study Functional Skills first. We run courses at our centres in:
Guildford, Woking, Camberley, Farnham, Sunbury and Molesey. You can study in the daytime or in the evening. All our courses last 2 hours and run once a week. You will work towards the City and Guilds Functional Skills English qualification.

Entry Requirements
If you already have a full Entry Level 2 or Entry Level 3 Functional Skills qualification, you can be entered for a qualification one level higher than the one you currently hold.
If you do not have any formal qualification in English, you will be placed in a class based on the results of your Initial assessment.

All applicants will be required to attend one of the Information Advice and Guidance sessions where you take both a written and an online initial assessment.
Please note that these courses are for fluent English speakers and unlikely to be suitable for ESOL learners without a Level 2 ESOL qualification.

There are no tuition, registration or examination fees to pay for this course if you are a British or a European Union resident.

You will be required to attend a minimum of 90% of your classes. Should your attendance fall below this, your place on the course may be at risk.

Course Content
The course has 3 components on which you will be assessed separately. These are:

• Speaking and Listening
• Reading
• Writing

Delivery Method
The courses are taught in English and delivered in class by a tutor who is a subject specialist. You will be expected to complete weekly homework tasks which your tutor will give you feedback on. In addition to this, we recommend that learners studying Functional Skills English develop learning skills and understanding outside the classroom through use of the Internet, Moodle and BKSB.

Functional Skills qualifications are stand-alone qualifications which will help you improve your career prospects. They will also maximise the opportunity for successful candidates to gain entry to a higher level Functional Skills course, or a GCSE, or an Apprenticeship programme in the future.

Additional Information
We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. When you enrol please let us know if you would like to discuss your extra support needs with a member of the Supported Learning Team who will then contact you as soon as possible. If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class. Surrey Adult Learning values and supports equality and diversity by promoting fairness and respect at all times.
