Japanese Calligraphy - Taster Day (SFY)

Japanese Calligraphy - Taster Day (SFY) [RDF138NZ]: Overview

Are you interested in Japanese culture? Brush Lettering? Zen? Meditation? Spend some quality time with us and bring your curiosity to learn something new! You can discover and experience the essence of Shodo the art of Japanese calligraphy.

What will we cover?
You will not only learn brush techniques but also experience the whole process of the art and understand yourself through your work. You will use the traditional Japanese materials of a brush, ink and Japanese paper and be guided how to create your first brush strokes and how to build on these basic steps to create some lovely Japanese characters. Learn the foundations and begin the path to lifelong practice.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?
Anyone interested in Japanese art and culture – no knowledge of the language is necessary although the tutor is a Japanese speaker and will guide you through the steps needed to write in Japanese.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?
Please wear dark colours or old clothes (or wear an apron) as occasionally ink can spill or spread.

You will need to bring some paper for practising on such as sugar paper or newspaper. You will be supplied with ink and paper for your finished work and the loan of a Japanese brush. If you have your own Japanese brushes and materials please bring them along. Your tutor can advise you where to buy your own materials to continue at home.

What can I do when I finish the course?
Further courses are available in Japanese Calligraphy and the tutor can guide you to learn more characters and cursive scripts.
