Pottery & Claywork

Pottery & Claywork [HDF1232G]: Overview

The aim of this course is to develop your pottery skills, both hand building and throwing, to share other decorative techniques such as surface decoration and glazing, to bring out your creativity and to know how a pottery runs.

What will we cover?

If you are a beginner, you will be taught three of the basic hand building methods – coiling, slabbing and pinching and, towards the end of the course, will be introduced to basic throwing techniques on electric wheels. You will also be taught how to add texture to clay, surface decoration and practical glazing.

If you are more advanced you will be given advice and tuition as required, following projects set by the tutor or of your own design.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

All abilities are welcome to join the class.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

It is essential that you wear closed toe shoes (not sandals or flip flops) as there are stairs leading to and in the pottery. Also, please bring an apron and an old towel when throwing as pottery can be messy.

A notepad or sketchbook and pen will also be needed.

Basic materials/technician costs are included. However, if you choose to work on a large items you may be asked to pay additional materials costs depending on the size and or quanitity of the projects. As a guide, Individual pieces higher than 15 inches/38 cm and wider than 12 inches/35 cm would be considered as large projects

What can I do when I finish the course?

You can progress within the course or alternatively you can build a portfolio of work for entry to Further Education.
