Course description

Pottery & Claywork - Improvers

Pottery & Claywork - Improvers [RDF4171G]: Overview

By the end of the course the learners should be able to demonstrate an understanding of Health and Safety rules in the Pottery Studio; produce at least one piece of work of their own choosing and decorate and glaze their work using one or more of the techniques taught.

What will we cover?

As this course is designed for the experienced learner they will be encouraged to work on projects of their own choosing with the support of the tutor who will provide demonstrations and introduce making and decorating techniques as and when appropriate. A group project will usually be offered, but is entirely optional.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Improvers. Learners should have approximately one year’s experience of the basic hand building and/or throwing techniques before attending this class.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

It is essential that you wear closed toe shoes (not sandals or flip flops) and bring an apron.

A suitable dustmask with the PF3 marking is also essential – disposable masks can be purchased in local DIY stores. (If you are unsure your tutor will be able to advise you). A small sketchbook or notebook and pen or pencils are useful and an old hand towel is needed for wheelwork.

What can I do when I finish the course?

Learners may wish to apply for further terms in order to continue learning and improving skills.

Additional information

Please note that there is a maximum size for those wishing to make larger pieces of work, which is 30cm x 30cm x 40cm. It is not possible to fire anything larger than this.

We welcome learners with additional needs and disabilities. When you enrol please let us know if you would like to discuss your extra support needs with a member of the Supported Learning Team who will then contact you as soon as possible. If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
