Course description

Stained Glass - Beginners

Beginners will be introduced to the beautiful and versatile art form. Learners will be shown the skills to produce a small stained-glass panel to hang, suncatcher and 3D candle holder. Improvers will use these 10 weeks to work on more complex projects.

What will we cover?

The 10-week course is designed as a taster or starting point. It will cover hand cutting glass and assembling the panel. The course will begin with cutting greenhouse glass, proceeding to a greenhouse glass terrarium in copper foil. The second project will be a sun catcher, between 8 and 12 coloured glass pieces, copper foiled and soldered. The third project will use the appliqué technique, producing a beautiful piece of art using off cut from previous projects. Improvers can develop their knowledge and techniques with more complex building in 3D, e.g. The Tiffany technique.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Suitable for beginners with no previous knowledge and for learners with stained glass experience who wish to expand their glasswork skills. This course is not suitable for pregnant or lactating mothers. As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Wear old clothes/apron and sensible, closed toe shoes (no sandals as glass splinters could be a problem). Week 1 – bring a piece of lining paper (wallpaper), pencil, pen and rubber and you will need to bring a piece of greenhouse glass, 3mm thick (not less, not more, not toughened or safety glass) and about 1 sq. ft., the shape is irrelevant, this is to learn and practice cutting on. Detailed information will be given on the first session.

All specialist tools and materials that are provided are for classroom use only.

Glass is not included but can be purchased from the centre. Expect to pay from £20-25 for glass depending on project size and choice of glass colours. You will have to provide your own stationery: waterproof fine marker pen (ideally a Sharpie in a metallic colour), pencil, rubber, graph and tracing paper.

Access to the Stained-Glass studio is via Ray Road.
If you have any queries, please email the tutor at adultlearning@surreycc.gov.uk

What can I do when I finish the course?

Hot pot glass fusing workshops to learn the basics; they have the opportunity to produce small, fused glass that can be included in the making of a stained-glass panel or object.
