The Art of Calligraphy - Improvers

The Art of Calligraphy - Improvers [FDF1122G]: Overview

The aim of this course is to further the skills and techniques of learners by studying additional scripts and techniques. The creative use of tools will be encouraged and learners will concentrate on layout and design skills whilst paying attention to correct letterform.

What will we cover?

The class will decide together which script they would like to study. There is the opportunity for personal study of alternative scripts. Colour, design and layout as well as related decorative techniques will be incorporated during the lessons. Learners will concentrate on correct letterforms whilst experimenting with weights and variations of the scripts.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

Improvers – learners should have some knowledge of calligraphy, be able to rule a page of lines and use a metal nib and reservoir in at least one basic style of writing.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Learners should bring their usual calligraphy equipment. (Broad-edged dip pens). There will be the opportunity to explore other tools and pens such as the pointed nib and automatic pens.

What can I do when I finish the course?

There is the opportunity to continue on with the following term’s calligraphy course. Additionally, membership of the Society of Scribes and Illuminators (SSI) and the Calligraphy and Lettering Arts Society (CLAS) will give a wider overview of the calligraphic world and opportunities to enrol of workshops, enter exhibitions and join the CLAS Ladder of Progress. Local calligraphy societies also organise workshops and talks. Information can be supplied by tutor.
