Upholstery [HEF2553G]: Overview

The aim is to introduce you to a range of methods and techniques of upholstery. The course is flexible and will be adapted depending on the pieces of furniture worked on.

What will we cover?

Assessment of individual items of furniture to determine the appropriate type of upholstery
Stripping of old upholstery, evaluating the condition of the frame and recognising necessary repairs
Naming and identifying of tools used and demonstration of their safe use
Identifying appropriate filling/stuffing/webbing and their use
Identifying/evaluating/measuring of suitable fabric/trimmings/buttons and how they will be used
Colour and design principles
Upholstering of an item of furniture using traditional or modern methods.
Working healthily and safely

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

All abilities. No specific skills or prior knowledge required.
Learners will have to transport their individual projects to the class on a weekly basis.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Items of furniture to be upholstered.
Notebook and pen.
Any upholstery tools you may have.
A digital camera/mobile phone to take photos as you go along
Wear sensible closed toe shoes.

What can I do when I finish the course?

You can progress on to other Surrey Adult Learning courses or onto accredited courses offered by other providers.

Additional information

Upholstery materials may be supplied by the tutor at cost price but you should provide fabric of your choice. This information will be passed to the tutor who will contact you if required
