Course description

Upholstery [RDF2949G]: Overview

This is a workshop style course where learners work on their own projects at their own pace with help and guidance from the tutor to achieve a good result.

What will we cover?

Learners will develop their upholstery skills to complete their individual projects. Projects will vary according to type of furniture and can be either traditional or modern depending on the piece. Traditional will be completed using hair, wadding, tacks and traditional stitched edges for example. Modern furniture may use foam, glue and staples.

We will cover the correct use of tools, suitability of upholstery materials, fabric estimation etc.
Minor frame repairs and renovation can be carried out in the class though more major repairs will need to be done at home or by a furniture restorer so that the upholstery process can progress.

Please note that larger items such as armchairs are likely to take longer than one term to complete. If you have any queries about your piece of furniture, please email the tutor at

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

This course is for all abilities – beginners and more advanced as everyone works on their own furniture at their own pace.

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

Bring a portable chair, footstool, etc to be reupholstered.
There is no need to buy an upholstery tool kit until you know what you will need for your project but if you have a hammer, wooden mallet, old chisel, scissors, pliers to start stripping down these may be useful to start with. Other useful items to have are scissors, soft tape measure, and containers for tacks, notebook, pencil and camera for recording.

Extra costs include re-upholstery materials to complete your project – most of the basic materials are available to buy from the tutor and advice will be given for additional items needed.
Also additional costs for your chosen fabric and braid.

It is essential that you wear closed toe shoes (not sandals or flip flops) and bring an apron or wear old clothes.

What can I do when I finish the course?

Continue to further upholstery courses where there will be the opportunity to progress to more advanced projects such as upholstering larger items and using more complex techniques such as deep buttoning.
