Course description

Woodcut & Relief Printmaking

Learn about the wonderful craft of relief printmaking and create your own unique piece(s) of art. Maybe you remember doing Lino cuts at school? We will concentrate on woodcuts, carving into Japanese plywood to create wonderful expressive pieces. You’ll learn techniques that will enable you to create beautiful prints whether or not you’re ‘good’ at drawing. The aim of this course is to guide you through the processes, techniques and materials needed to design and make your own individual prints in a friendly, encouraging and inspiring environment.

What will we cover?

• Finding inspiration, planning and designing.
• Materials.
• Cutting tools and techniques.
• Different working methods.
• Health and safety associated with the craft

Improvers will be encouraged and supported to develop their printmaking knowledge and expertise and push their artistic boundaries.
We will aim to create a working studio environment where learners can be inspired, encouraged and learn from each other. The tutor will be able to give 1:1 support.

Who is this course for? Is there anything I need to know before joining?

As our courses are taught in English, please contact us if you have any concerns about your level of English.

What do I need to bring to the first class? Will there be any extra costs?

The tutor will provide basic tools and equipment for use in the classroom, there will be gloves, Printing inks and paper. We will be hand printing and not using a printing press.
A sketch book and pencil, plus photos/pictures for inspiration would be useful.

If you have your own printing rollers and cutting tools, please bring them with you.

It is essential that you wear sensible shoes and bring an apron or wear old clothes.

What can I do when I finish the course?

Learners may progress onto the next Woodcut & Relief Printing course to work on more complex designs and multicolour printing and gain confidence to work on printing projects independently. There are also opportunities throughout the year to exhibit your print works.

If you are enrolling within 10 days of the course start date, we may not be able to contact you before your first class.
