Designing with Glass as a Structural Material

This half day course focuses on the design and detailing of structural glass elements. Learn everything you need to know about working with glass as a key structural material as it continues to become an integral factor in the majority of builds. 


Chris O’Regan is a principal structural engineer at AECOM Ltd., London. As a graduate structural engineer he was trained at Dewhurst MacFarlane & Partners, where he first started designing structural glass elements. In 2012, he revised the Institution’s Structural use of glass in buildings, bringing it in line with current methods of design, construction and maintenance of glass structures.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Structural engineers who are well-versed in the design of more traditional materials such as steel, concrete and timber using current codes of practice.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

By the end of this course, you should be able to:

  • Recognise the performance of glass as a structural material
  • Apply current methodology of designing structural glass elements that is based on limit state theory
  • Design simple structural elements in glass
  • Specify structural glass elements
  • Inspect and maintain structural glass elements
