Suitability - Who should attend?

This AAT Level 3 Diploma is perfect for professionals with experience in a finance office or those who have completed the AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting. Studying an AAT course is a great progression route on to chartered accountancy.

Upon successful completion of the programme and all assignments, you will be awarded the AAT Level 3 Diploma in Accounting.

Training Course Content

The course is split into six manageable units with an additional revision unit for the synoptic assessment:

Unit 1: Advanced Bookkeeping

This unit will allow learners to apply the principles of advanced double-entry bookkeeping, implement procedures for the acquisition and disposal of non-current assets, prepare and record depreciation calculations, record period end adjustments and produce and extend the trial balance.

On completion of this unit, learners will sit a computer-based test* at a local centre of their choice. Topics from this unit may also appear within the synoptic assessment for Unit 5 and 6.

Unit 2: Final Accounts Preparation

This unit will allow learners to distinguish between the financial recording and reporting requirements of different types of organisation, the need for final accounts and the accounting and ethical principles underlying their preparation as well as preparing accounting records from incomplete information, producing accounts for sole traders and partnerships and the key differences between preparing accounts for a limited company and a sole trader.

On completion of this unit, learners will sit a computer-based test* at a local centre of their choice. Topics from this unit may also appear within the synoptic assessment for Unit 5 and 6.

Unit 3: Management Accounting: Costing

This unit will provide learners with an understanding of the purpose and use of management accounting within an organisation, apply techniques required for dealing with costs, apportion costs according to organisational requirements, analyse and review deviations from budget and report these to management and apply management accounting techniques to support decision making.

On completion of this unit, learners will sit a computer-based test* at a local centre of their choice. Topics from this unit may also appear within the synoptic assessment for Unit 5 and 6.

Unit 4: Indirect Tax

This unit will provide learners with an understanding of applying VAT legislation requirements, accurately completing VAT returns and submitting them in a timely manner, the implications for the business of errors, omissions, late filing and payment as well as reporting VAT-related information within the organisation in accordance with regulatory and organisation requirements.

On completion of this unit, learners will sit a computer-based test* at a local centre of their choice. Topics from this unit may also appear within the synoptic assessment for Unit 5 and 6.

Unit 5: Ethics for Accountants

This unit will provide learners with an understanding of the need to act ethically, the relevance to the accountants work of the ethical code for professional accountants, how to act ethically in an accounting role and identify actions to take in relation to unethical behaviour or illegal acts.

Unit 6: Spreadsheets for Accounting

This unit will allow learners to design and structure appropriate spreadsheets to meet customer needs, use spreadsheet software to record, format and organise data, use relevant tools to manipulate and analyse data, use software tools to verify accuracy and protect data and use tools and techniques to prepare and report accounting information.

Additional synoptic assessment preparation

Learners are also given an additional bonus revision unit to prepare for the synoptic assessment. This additional unit includes revision sections for the key topics presented throughout all six units. This unit is built to give learners an indication as to which areas need to be further revised and will help to identify a learner’s strengths and weaknesses.

The synoptic exam is a case study style exam, where learners work through scenarios before answering the questions. They can cover any topic from any of the units in the level 3 course.

On completion of all units, learners will sit a computer-based synoptic assessment at a local centre of their choice.

*One exam entry fee per unit is included in the cost of this course. Any resits will be charged separately.
