Course description


The Site Management Safety Training Scheme (SMSTS) would benefit site managers, agents and persons who are, or are about to be, responsible for planning, organising, monitoring and administering groups of staff and workforce.

This CITB accredited certificate provides participants with an understanding of their responsibilities and accountability for site safety, health and welfare, current health and safety legislation. It highlights the need for risk assessment in the workplace, the implementation of the necessary control measures and adequate communication to sustain a health and safety culture among the workforce.

This industry-recognised course is ideal for individuals or companies who need to meet the ever-increasing demand for evidence of sound health and safety management on site.

Possession of this qualification is listed in the Approved Code of Practice for the Construction (Design and Management) (CDM) Regulations as a demonstration of competence in the role of site manager.

On successful completion of this course each participant will receive a CITB certificate valid for 5 years.

  • The Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations

  • Feedback on pre-course exercise
  • Health and safety and the manager
  • Implementing health and safety legislation
  • Review of day 1 and homework setting 

Day two

  • Introduction to Day 2
  • Report back and discussion on Exercise 1
  • Management of contractors
  • The working environment
  • Working at height
  • Health and safety management for plant, equipment and systems of work
  • Exercise 2: Managers ‘and supervisors’ responsibilities
  • Review of day 2 and homework setting

Day three

  • Introduction to day 3
  • Report back and discussion on exercise 2
  • Managing construction health risk
  • Monitoring health and safety
  • Exercise 3: Site briefing
  • Review of day 3 and homework setting

Day four

  • Introduction to Day 4
  • Report back and discussion on Exercise 3
  • Communication and co-operation
  • Construction health and safety
  • Exercise 4: Site layout
  • Review of day 4 and homework/ revision setting
