Abrasive Wheels - Working Safely with Abrasive Wheels

Almost half of all accidents involving abrasive wheels occur because of a faulty system, or mistakes due to lack of training. If you work with abrasive wheels, it’s crucial to understand the safety control measures and health and safety best practices to ensure a risk-free working environment.

This introductory Abrasive Wheels – working Safely With Abrasive Wheels Course is designed to train you how to work correctly with abrasive wheels, covering key topics such as risk assessment, risk reduction, legislation and employer responsibilities. You’ll also learn how to carry out inspections and checks, to implement a safe system in the workplace.

Upon course completion, you’ll have knowledge of the correct tools, techniques and safety control measures needed to prevent accidents involving abrasive wheels, as well as how to comply with workplace safety legislation.

Suitability - Who should attend?

The European Union Regulation (EC) No 852/2004 on the hygiene of foodstuffs recommend that food handlers be skilfully trained before carrying out their role.

This Level 2 Food Hygiene and Safety for Catering enables you to understand how to abide by the required legal practices and responsibilities of a food handler by equipping you with a comprehensive introduction to accurate food handling methods.

This course is ideal for all food handlers working in the catering industry inclusive of: restaurants, bars, hotels, cafes, fast-food outlets, takeaways, kitchens, mobile food trucks, hospitals, schools, colleges, universities and canteens.

Who should take the course

This course is suitable for you if you use abrasive wheels in your day-to-day activities and is particularly relevant if you work with bench grinders, pedestal grinders and angle grinders.

For enrolment on this course prior experience and knowledge of using abrasive wheels would be useful but, as it is aimed at an introductory level, no previous training or qualifications are essential.

Training Course Content

The course is divided into 4 accessible, interactive modules and includes an assessment at the end.

Introduction To Abrasive Wheels Topic covered, who needs abrasive wheels training, what are abrasive wheels, danger of abrasive wheels, wheel safety, legislation, employer responsibilities, hierarchy control measures.

Risk Assessment Topics to be covered, what is risk assessment, step one - identify hazards, step two - deciding who might be harmed and how, step three - evaluate the risk, step four - record the findings and implement them, step five - monitor, review and update.

Risk Reduction – Part One Topics covered, can te task be avoided?, wheel speed, wheel handing and storage, wheel mounting, wheel mounting and spindles, mechanical guards, safe working practices, inspection and checks, dressing abrasive wheels.

Risk Reduction – Part Two Topics Covered, personal protective equipment, eye protection, harmful dusts, dust extraction, dust PPE, vibration, noise, sparks, portable grinders, cable, training, communication and housekeeping, emergency procedures.
