Course description

Advanced Equine Dentistry

Day One starts with a series of interactive lectures designed to hone your skills and knowledge in the work up of dental cases, from how to perform the perfect dental examination and utilising oroscopy, to refining dental radiographic techniques and revision of the nerve blocks and multimodal anaesthesia techniques required for oral extractions. Oral extraction techniques are covered in a lecture before splitting off into smaller groups for the afternoon’s hands-on practical sessions. Under the guidance of specialists, you will have the opportunity to practice examination, oroscopy, nerve blocks and tooth extraction techniques on cadavers, including repulsion techniques. An interactive case-based discussion finishes off the day.

Day Two will cover advanced dental imaging and surgical techniques relevant to advanced equine dentistry. The morning’s interactive lectures include advanced imaging of the equine head, complications of surgical extraction, sinus examination and surgery, mandibular and premaxilla fracture repair and management of diastema and periodontal disease. Recent advances and EBVM are incorporated along with how to implement this into your clinical practice.

Practical sessions in the afternoon allow the opportunity to practice these skills in small groups under the close direction of specialists. With a demonstration of minimally invasive transbuccal extraction techniques and opportunity to practice mandibular and premaxilla fracture repair and different approached to sinus examination including the trans-nasal endoscopic approach, this day will leave you with the confidence to manage more challenging dental cases seen in the practice setting.
