Equine Essential Surgery Skills

Day One, Orthopaedic Surgery: This day covers many of the core surgical procedures from the RCVS CertAVP equine orthopaedic surgery list, combining interactive lectures and two separate wet-lab sessions working in small groups on cadavers to practice these procedures under the guidance of specialists experienced in clinical teaching. Lecture topics include management of angular and flexural limb deformities, indications for arthroscopy and tenoscopy, initial management and stabilisation of suspected fracture and management of septic arthritis and osteomyelitis in foals. Practical teaching will be supported by interactive lectures demonstrating the techniques. The first practical session will cover palmar digital neurectomy, desmotomy of the accessory ligament of the DDFT and repair of tendon lacerations whilst the second session will focus on hoof wall resection, management of hoof capsule injuries, application of foot and distal limb casts and needle lavage.

Day Two, Soft Tissue Surgery. As for day one this workshop uses a combination of interactive lectures and two wet-lab sessions to cover many of the core surgical procedures from the RCVS CertAVP equine soft tissue surgery list. Lectures cover practical techniques and tips, supported by videos demonstrating specific procedures, before participants head to the wet-lab and split into smaller groups to practice these skills on cadavers under the guidance of specialists experienced in clinical teaching. The first practical session will cover intestinal suturing and skin grafting, nerve blocks of the head, enucleation, eyelid and nostril suturing whilst the second session will focus on distal phallectomy and sinus trephination/flaps. Surgery of the female urogenital tract will also be covered in a lecture.

Suitability - Who should attend?
