Pain Management in Equine Practice (Via BEVA)

This course is aimed at those in ambulatory practice where owners may be managing cases day to day. It aims to help with pain management in those tricky yard cases such as painful laminitis, fractures and acute injury, as well as with colics and acute trauma. With a range of speakers from ambulatory practice, hospital practice new drugs, ideas and approaches will be discussed with the emphasis on the yard environment.

Suitability - Who should attend?

Suitable for RCVS Modules : B-EP3, C modules: Basic equine practice, Equine Anaesthesia and Analgesia

Outcome / Qualification etc.

Key Learning Objectives

  • Develop an understanding of new approaches to pain management on the yard
  • Refresh your knowledge on standard analgesic techniques
  • Learn practical tips on pain management in a yard setting
  • Be able to confidently identify signs of pain in the horse

Programme Day 1

  • Physiology
  • Pain assessment/pain scoring
  • Physical methods for pain management
  • Drugs update/familiar drugs refresher
  • Drugs update - “new drugs”
  • Pain management in acutre trauma (case scenario based interactive session)
  • Analgesia for colic and visceral pain (case scenario based interactive session)
  • Pain management in acute laminitis (case scenario based interactive session)
  • Pain management in chronic conditions (case scenario based interactive session)
  • Welfare and where to draw the line
  • What you (may) have in your car and how to use it!
