Course description

Practical Equine Ophthalmology and Neurology

Day One - Ophthalmology

With a focus on those tricky cases commonly seen in practice, this day starts with lectures covering how to diagnose and manage those nagging eye cases from indolent ulcers to persistent corneal oedema. Case discussions, exploring the topics of cataracts and fundic examination and other pre-purchase exam dilemmas, give you the chance to discuss these potentially stressful situations with your peers and the course tutors. You are also invited to bring your own cases for discussion on the day.

An afternoon practical session focusing on ophthalmic nerve blocks, sub-palpebral catheter placement and ocular ultrasound will leave you with the confidence to manage these cases well in the practice setting.

Day Two - Neurology

Lectures and small group seminars will take you through diagnosing and managing a range of neurological disorders seen in equine practice. Starting with a fresh look at the neurological examination and a logical and practical approach to neurolocalisation, the day then goes on to delve deeper into specific conditions, from ataxia to headshaking. With a practical and visual approach to this often challenging subject, the day’s lectures are packed with images and cases to make the subject accessible and relevant to equine practitioners. The day finishes with case-based discussions and radiological interpretation and evaluation in groups small enough to allow fully interactive discussions tailored to your level of experience. You are also welcome to bring along your own cases for discussion.
