Course description

Practical Lameness and Diagnostic Evaluation for Practitioners

Day One: Interactive lectures, case discussions and small group practical sessions will take you through the examination and diagnostic approach to lameness cases, with a focus on practical techniques. A morning of lectures and case discussions will take a fresh look at the clinical examination of the lame horse, dynamic assessment and manipulative tests and a review of the indications of diagnostic anaesthesia and techniques for the lower limb. The theory and practicality of using objective vs subjective measurements of lameness diagnosis will also be addressed. An afternoon hands-on practical session covering a variety of peri-neural and intra-articular blocks and limb dissection using cadaver material will enable you to consolidate the morning's teaching.

Day Two: With a focus more on the proximal limb this day will cover the diagnostic techniques used in lameness diagnosis of the tarsus, carpus, stifle and more. Lectures incorporating the latest advances in diagnostic anaesthesia of the tarsus, carpus, stifle and shoulder region will revise anatomy and introduce the latest in EBVM to help you get the most out of managing these cases.

The theory is supported by live horse practicals: ultrasound of the stifle and shoulder, identification of the landmarks for stifle blocks, and a hands-on wet-lab practical covering perineural and intrasynovial techniques for the carpal and tarsal regions.

Suitability - Who should attend?

The workshop is suitable for those working at advanced practitioner level or studying for an RCVS CertAVP in equine orthopaedic surgery, equine lameness diagnosis and therapeutics or equine practice.

Outcome / Qualification etc.

Learning Outcomes

  • Describe the indications for diagnostic anaesthesia including the mechanisms of action and contraindications
  • Perform and interpret the results of lower limb peri-neural and intra-articular diagnostic analgesia as it relates to lameness diagnosis
  • Identify relevant anatomy and landmarks in order to perform diagnostic analgesia of the carpal, tarsal, stifle and shoulder regions.
  • Interpret the results of peri-neural and intra-synovial blocks in the carpal, tarsal, stifle and shoulder regions, as it relates to lameness diagnosis
