Course description

NCFE/CACHE Level 3 Certificate in Understanding Mental Health

This qualification is designed to increase learners’ knowledge and understanding of mental health and mental well-being. Successful completion of the required units will allow the learner to develop in-depth knowledge and understanding of mental health. It will also support progression into relevant employment within the health and social care sector.

The course is split into five mandatory units:Understanding the context of mental health and wellbeing In this unit learners will gain an understanding of a range of current mental health legislation and how it has evolved over time. The learner will consider the changes and how they are applied within the context of mental health service provision.Promotion of mental health and wellbeing In this unit learners will gain an understanding of the factors that might influence mental health and well-being in the different stages of a person’s life.

The learner will explore current national strategy and public health campaigns to demonstrate an understanding of how to support people to improve their mental health and well-being.Mental health problems: associated issues and consequences In this unit learners will explain the social consequences of mental health problems for the individual, their family and society as a whole. The learner will consider the effects of substance and alcohol misuse and consider the links between mental health and offending.Understanding mental ill health In this unit learners will gain an understanding of a range of mental health conditions.

The learner will demonstrate an understanding of the recovery model and the role of the mental health worker in supporting individuals.Working in mental health In this unit learners will know how to develop skills, knowledge and attitudes necessary for working in mental health services.

Suitability - Who should attend?

  • Learners must be aged 19 years or over on 1st April 2021.
  • Must have lived in the UK or EU for the last three years.
  • Must currently reside in England, in a post code outside of the Mayor of London, Greater Manchester, Liverpool City, Cambridge & Peterborough, Tees Valley, West Midlands and the North of Tyne Combined Authority NTCA.
  • In order to be eligible to complete this course for free, Learners must not already hold a full Level 3 qualification (e.g. four AS Levels or two A Levels etc). If Wiltshire College and University Centre are not able to obtain government funding, then Learners will be expected to pay a course fee of £811 or Learners can apply for an Advanced Learner Loan.
  • Learners must not be completing any other funded courses such as an Apprenticeship or any other NCFE course.
  • Learners can only complete one Level 3 qualification for free.
  • Learners who already hold a full Level 3 qualification and wish to complete this course can do so for a fee of £811 or apply for an Advanced Learner Loan.

Training Course Content

This qualification will:

  • focus on the study of mental health and mental well-being to support different occupational areas
  • offer breadth and depth of study, incorporating a key core of knowledge and understanding.

The objectives of this qualification are to help learners to understand:

  • mental health legislation, services, and public attitudes and how these have evolved
  • how to support mental well-being through various stages of life
  • mental ill-health, treatment options available and the potential consequences of mental ill-health
  • the skills required to work in a mental health service.

Continuing Studies

Learners who achieve this qualification could progress to:

  • Level 3 Award in Awareness of the Mental Capacity Act 2005
  • Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care (Adults) for England
  • Level 3 Certificate in Preparing to Work in Adult Social Care

This qualification may be useful to a wide range of learners studying across a number of sectors/areas.
