Radiation Protection Basics

Course Overview
Basic Radiation Safety addresses the hazards associated with ionizing radiations, the precautions to be taken working around ionizing radiation, and in the methods of protection. This course covers awareness of the content of any special requirements for a Nuclear facility and the importance of complying with these requirements. It also covers emergency situations that can occur and the actions to be taken in the event of an actual emergency.
Suitability - Who should attend?
This course is designed to familiarize in-house non-technical people with the nuclear industry. All new entrants, non-technical and technical alike, along with more experienced people that require a broader understanding of the industry will benefit from this course.

Participants will understand the basic principles of Radiation Safety and the industry best practices in today’s Nuclear industry, means and methods used to reduce exposure using practices and procedures to access and work in a Nuclear facility.
You will learn how to:
- Define the Acute Radiation Exposure, Chronic Radiation Exposure, Maximum Survivable Dose, Long Term Health Effects
- Define the term As Low As Reasonably Achievable (ALARA)
- Identify the organ of interest or concern for Gamma radiation, Beta radiation, Neutron radiation, Alpha radiation
- Identify the unit used to measure radiation dose
- Identify five ways you can reduce your internal and external radiation exposure
- Define the purpose of a dosimeter
